What to expect

Here’s what you need to know before you arrive:

Open for school visits Tuesday to Friday, term time only
Galleries are free to enter
Self-guided visits and object handling sessions are both available for schools, FE, and HE groups
Booked sessions can use the Learning Room for lunch, with space to store coats and bags
Water bottle refill point in the cloakroom – bring reusable bottles
Toilets are located next to the Learning Room

Arriving on the day

If you’ve booked a session

Check your confirmation email for timings.

On arrival, a member of our Learning Team will greet you and take you straight to the Learning Room, where your class has access to toilets and space for coats and bags.

If you're a self-guided group

Check your confirmation email for timings.

A member of our Learning Team will greet you and answer any initial questions. If anything comes up as you explore, our Front of House team are always on hand to help or find someone from Learning for you.

Keeping your group safe

We recommend a site visit ahead of your trip to help you complete your own risk assessment. To help with that, here’s what’s already in place on our side.

What we do to keep your group safe

All school activities are planned with safety fully considered
All Learning Team staff are DBS checked
Risk assessments are completed for all new activities
Gallery tours are checked for trip hazards in advance
Equipment is selected and used according to manufacturer guidance
Electrical equipment is checked regularly
Fire exits are clearly marked, and staff are trained in evacuation procedures
A uniformed member of staff can help with first aid if needed
If a child becomes separated from your group, speak to any uniformed staff member straight away

Please note: the welfare of your students remains the responsibility of accompanying teachers and staff at all times, so we ask that you stick to the ratios below when planning your visit.
