Give a few hours and make a real difference to people’s lives right here in Tunbridge Wells. Whether you love talking to visitors, supporting families, or working behind the scenes, there’s a role that fits you.
Why Volunteer with us?
The Amelia is a place where people come to explore, discover and connect. Volunteers are a big part of what makes that happen. You’ll meet people from all walks of life, pick up new skills and be part of a genuinely welcoming team.
There’s no typical volunteer. Some of our team are retired and looking for regular company and purpose. Others are students building experience. Many are simply people who love what The Amelia does and want to be part of it. Whatever brings you here, you’ll be made welcome.
Learning is at the heart of everything The Amelia does and as a volunteer, you’ll be right in the middle of it. That might mean helping primary school children handle real objects from the museum collection, supporting a family piecing together the story of Tunbridge Wells, or sparking a conversation with a visitor who arrives curious and leaves genuinely inspired.
It goes both ways too. You’ll build your own knowledge of local history, art, and archaeology – discovering just how extraordinary this corner of Kent really is. Watch a child’s face when they hold something genuinely old for the first time, or help a researcher find exactly what they were looking for. These are the moments that make The Amelia what it is.
Current roles we are recruiting for:
Engagement Volunteer:
Get involved in the day-to-day life of the galleries and events spaces. You might be welcoming visitors, helping with a workshop, supporting a talk, or assisting with one of our family activity days. Full training is provided and no prior experience is needed – just enthusiasm and a friendly manner.
Family Engagement Volunteer:
On our Discovery Days and family events, you’ll help children and their parents or carers get the most from their visit. That means sparking conversations, helping with activities, and making sure every family feels genuinely welcome from the moment they arrive.
Please note: we’re not currently able to offer work experience placements. If that changes, we’ll update this page.
What you’ll get out of it:
Volunteering at The Amelia is a genuinely rewarding experience. You’ll build practical skills in a busy public-facing venue, and because our team take training seriously, you’ll always feel supported rather than thrown in at the deep end.
Many of our volunteers tell us it’s given them confidence they didn’t expect – whether that’s talking to strangers, running activities or simply feeling part of something purposeful every week.
The experience and reference you build here carries real weight too. Whether you’re heading towards a career in museums, education, hospitality or the arts, or just want something meaningful to show for your time, volunteering at The Amelia gives you something worth talking about.
(To be replaced). I came in not really knowing what to expect, and left each week feeling like I’d actually done something. The team made me feel valued from the start — and the confidence I’ve gained has surprised even me.
